Black history month is going strong and we wanted to take a moment to highlight the powerful legacy of two African American environmentalists who have fought for climate justice and conservation.
Hazel Johnson was a pioneering activist who fought against environmental racism. Living in Chicago`s Altgeld Gardens, a public housing complex surrounded by toxic waste sites, Johnson exposed how pollution disproportionately harmed African American communities. In 1979, she founded People for Community Recovery (PCR), leading efforts to address water contamination, air pollution, and hazardous waste.
---
Dr. Robert Bullard is a leading scholar and activist who has spent decades exposing how environmental hazards disproportionately impact Black, low-income, and marginalized communities.
His groundbreaking 1990 book, Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class, and Environmental Quality, was one of the first to document environmental racism in the U.S., showing how toxic waste sites, industrial pollution, and poor environmental policies harm communities of color.
---
Both Dr. Bullard and Hazel`s work have significantly influenced national policies, including President Clinton`s 1994 Executive Order on Environmental Justice, and continue to shape the fight for climate justice, clean air, and safe water for all.
Let`s continue to honor their contributions by advocating for a greener, more just future!

❤️Update❤️
Due to concerns over air quality during the Palisades fire, we will not be doing any cleanups for the remainder of January. While this situation is fluid and we appreciate your patience during this time, we do hope to resume again in February. Please keep an eye on our social media pages as well as our website for our next cleanup date.
We hope you are all safe and well and our hearts go out to those who have been directly and indirectly affected by the fires at this time.
Thank you!

Our Mission
Venice Community Cleanups' mission is to create collaborative contribution: by cleaning up together, we empower each other to self-initiate cleanups
that preserve our home town of Venice.
Sustainable
In hosting regular trash cleanups, we aim to create a more sustainable Venice. Through our actions, we strive to remind people to clean up after themselves and to seek recyclable, reusable, or compostable alternatives.
Aspirational
We strive to inspire the community to take action on their own - it is our hope that our volunteers become leaders of their own cleanups and that every single day there are multiple self generated options to help keep Venice clean.
Community
Venice is and always has been a unique beach side community. We celebrate the people who come out to support, the unique spaces in Venice, and the culture that makes our community stand out.
